The History
Chelsea Football Club, founded in 1905, is one of the most successful football clubs in England, based in West London. The club plays its home games at Stamford Bridge, a stadium it has called home since its inception.
Chelsea was formed by businessman Gus Mears, initially gaining popularity for its ambitious approach, including signing high-profile players. However, the club’s early years were marked by inconsistency, and major silverware eluded them for decades. Chelsea won their first significant trophy, the First Division title, in 1955.
The 1960s and 1970s saw Chelsea develop a reputation for flair on and off the pitch. Under manager Dave Sexton, they won the FA Cup in 1970 and their first European title, the Cup Winners' Cup, in 1971. However, financial instability in the 1980s led to struggles on the pitch, with Chelsea even being relegated from the top tier.
The 1990s marked a turning point. Under manager Ruud Gullit, Chelsea became an attractive team, winning the FA Cup in 1997. The true transformation occurred in 2003, when Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the club.
